Noontime Rising: Top Trending TV Shows of Latter July 2023

Variety shows are and have always been a socio-cultural staple on local noontime television, collectively enjoyed and supported by various Filipino families and communities. And through the coalescence of traditional and new media in contemporary times, it is no question how Philippine noontime TV has prevailed in the online conversations of Filipino viewers and in the emergence of social media trends alike.    For the second half of July 2023, Capstone-Intel Corporation conducted a social media listening analysis on the latest trending topics among Filipino users during the month’s concluding weeks by determining the top keywords that garnered the highest engagement scores. As verified in Capstone-Intel’s current analysis, TV shows have dominated the top trending list for the second half of July 2023 in the Philippine digital sphere, with the specific broadcasts and channels being the following:   Rank Topic Engagement Score 1 GMA 2,748,859.00 2 E.A.T 2,255,326.00 3 Tv5 1,641,772.00 4 It’s Showtime 874,047.00 5 JeepneyTV 122,365.00 6 Cinemo 39,927.00   GMA Network continues to spark traction among Filipino netizens online with their recently held industry event of the year, GMA Gala 2023. Kapamilya stars of the noontime show “It’s Showtime,” namely Anne Curtis, Vice Ganda, Vhong Navarro, and Jhong Hillario, strutted the red carpet of the GMA Gala 2023, stunning madlang people and kapuso audiences alike. On top of that, viral GMA artists like Barbie Forteza, Jak Roberto, and David Licauco were dazed at the said carpet festivities. Transcending the grandiosity and allure the invited local A-list celebrities and luminary personalities attract publicly, it is worthwhile noting that the GMA Gala 2023 also serves as a fund-raising event for the benefit of the GMA Kapuso Foundation. The annually held ball has left a lasting impact not just on the artists, but also on the Filipino masses, as it gained a milestone in the realm of social media, and more so, in the entertainment industry. It was truly a sparkling night to remember.   After a surprising “Eat Bulaga!” exit, TVJ—consisting of Tito Sotto, Vic Sotto, and Joey de Leon—was filled with mixed emotions in their shift to a different broadcasting channel in noontime television via ‘E.A.T.’ on TV5, stirring puzzled reactions from netizens online. Based on Capstone-Intel’s scan of the keyword, “legitdabarkads,” gaining a substantial share of engagement scores online, the aforementioned group joined the three industry veterans in their network transfer, namely Allan K, Maine Mendoza, and Jeni Ferre. When asked the meaning of E.A.T., taglines were playfully heeded from TVJ, such as “Everyday ang Tawanan”, “Eto ang Tunay!”, “Eto ang Truth”, “Eto ang Tinadhana”, and “Eto ang Title.” Despite their unexpected exit from their previous longest-running noontime show ‘Eat Bulaga!’ on GMA Network, TVJ ensured that their mission continues to provide a thousand and one joys to Filipino viewers.   Tuning into the next channel, the noontime variety show, “It’s Showtime,” makes its televised debut on GMA’s GTV with a bang. The iconic noontime show kicked off its journey in its new home on July 1, 2023, and netizens on social media just won’t stop buzzing about the quintessential moment in the history of Philippine noontime television. Thriving on the latest hit segments of the variety show, madlang people are undoubtedly hooked to the catchy theme song of ‘Mini Miss U’, garnering a significant rise in popularity in the TikTok community and in the total engagement score accumulated in Capstone-Intel’s recent study, as well. With the Filipino masses dancing along to the theme song’s chorus, “Hello! Madlang People, Mabuhay!”, remixes and videos have reached more than 30,000 in the past month. A corollary to its addicting theme tune is its young contestants that leave Filipino audiences with awe in the bright showcase of their diverse talents, intellect, and empathy, despite their juvenility.    Ultimately, Jeepney TV and Cinemo make the cut in Capstone-Intel’s trending list. The former grants Kapamilya and Jeepney fans alike easy access to classic Kapamilya shows, including “Magandang Buhay”, “It’s Showtime”, and “ASAP”, to name a few. Whereas, the latter delivers local and foreign movies and series revolving around genres of action, comedy, horror, and fantasy. These two TV channels broadcasted by ABS-CBN Corporation, alongside Asianovela Channel, Movie Central, MYX and O Shopping, mainly offer archived shows for their elderly viewers. Despite the growing popularity of online streaming, airing classic Filipino films and dramas remains relevant in discussions in the realm of social media. On account of media convergence, television has been accessible and available at one click away. More than just a shift in technology, social media has involved members of the Filipino community belonging to different walks of life in discussions and trends about their all-time favorite noontime TV shows that have them glued to their screens at lunch time. And Capstone-Intel’s social media listening study on trending topics proves just that. Tallying up July’s Sporting Events

Sports are back, and stronger than ever! This July, it seems like every athlete in the country tightened their shoelaces and put their jerseys back on because a number of sporting events commenced. According to Capstone-Intel’s data gathered for July 16 to 31, sports was the 2nd most talked-about category in the country on social media, a four-place difference from July 1 to 15’s 6th place. In two weeks, there were over 10 million engagements with the topic, compared to the mere 875,000 scores it got in the first half of the month. What caused the jump?    Volleyball PVL, or the Premier Volleyball League, continued to reign supreme among the sporting series in the country. With the 2023 PVL Invitational Conference holding its finals on July 30, it garnered a whopping 8.5 million engagements across the top three trends “pvl2023,” “theheartofvolleyball,” and “pvlononesports.” In the end, it is the Japanese team Kurashiki Ablaze that dethroned reigning champion team Creamline Cool Smashers, with the foreign team winning three of the five matches for the trophy. Cignal HD Spikers meanwhile earns the bronze, as the F2 Logistics Cargo Movers are unable to make the best out of their five matches.   Football The Philippines Women’s National Team recently made history by scoring their first-ever points in a World Cup stint since their formalization in the 1980s. FIFA is the Fédération Internationale de Football Association, and it holds the World Cup, Football’s most prestigious award. Filipinas is the women’s national team, and they won the FIFA Women’s World Cup on July 25, 2023 against New Zealand when Sarina Brolden scored a match point. Thus, keywords such as “fifawwc,” “labanfilipinas,” “parasabayan,” “filipinastayo,” and “fwwc2023” garnered a total of 1.1 million engagements online, and the win put the country up to rank 46 in FIFA’s women’s standings. Sadly, the Filipinas lost to Norway in the July 30 match, therefore ending their campaign in the World Cup. With this record point and win though, the team returns to the country with their spirits higher than ever.   E-Sports Third on the ranking list are e-sports, with a total of 350,000 engagements across the internet. Echo Proud from Echo Philippines are the dethroned champions in the World Cyber Games 2023, of which the championship took place on July 30, 2023. Losing 3-2, the Mobile Legends: Bang Bang players garnered over 250,000 engagements online with the trends “echo,” “echoloud,” and “echoproud.“ On the other hand, the trend “dota2” collected 58,000 engagements online when Polaris Esports and Neon Esports of the Philippines competed in the Phygital Games held last July 24 to July 27. Polaris was unable to advance to the quarterfinals after losing to Russia’s One More and Kazahkstan’s UALEIKUMNIHAO, while Neon got to the semi-finals, only losing to Peru’s Thunder Awaken. Taking third place on the esports ranking are Lupon WXC and Kuya Nic, which have gotten about 45,000 engagements since the Riyadh Masters 2023 commenced from July 19 to 30. Kuya Nic is one of the commentators and analysts, meanwhile, Lupon WXC is a Filipino-rooted gaming and e-sports company.  Final on the trend list is PBA on Tour, with 159,000 engagements online for the chain of exhibition games that the association is putting on. Interestingly, a sporting event that didn’t make the cut for the trending list is the Palarong Pambansa 2023, which is an annual sporting event for kids and teens in different schools, cities, and regions. It has been canceled since 2020, only now making a comeback— specifically opening the ceremony on July 29, as a competition on a nationwide scale. Now we can surely say that sports are back in full force, and the public’s consumption and support for them haven’t waned. With it also being the middle of summer vacation, a lot more people can dedicate their time to tuning in and watching the games. With numerous national and international sporting events still coming our way, these numbers will hopefully keep up and pick up more.
