Nationwide survey reveals alarming statistics: 59% of Filipinos lack private medical insurance

Medical insurance plays a crucial role in ensuring access to affordable and quality healthcare services. It provides financial protection to individuals and families by covering a portion or all their medical expenses. Moreover, it acts as a safety net, providing individuals with the peace of mind that they will be able to receive necessary medical treatment without worrying about the financial implications. In line with this, Capstone-Intel Corporation conducted an extensive analysis of Filipino attitudes towards private medical insurance. To gather accurate data, Capstone-Intel conducted a nationwide survey from August 1 to 10, 2023, involving a total of 1,205 respondents. The conducted study involved asking the respondents regarding their possession of private medical insurance. The findings revealed that 35% of respondents indicated having private medical insurance, while 59% did not, and 6% were uncertain. Furthermore, the data revealed information about how those who possessed private medical insurance obtained it. Specifically, 44% of individuals personally paid for their insurance, 43% obtained it through their employment, 17% were beneficiaries of the head of their household, and 11% were beneficiaries of their children. Additionally, the study sought to understand the reasons behind the lack of medical insurance among respondents. The results indicate that 63% cited the high cost of insurance as the primary factor influencing their decision. Furthermore, 30% mentioned reliance on government health programs as sufficient for their healthcare needs. A subset of 22% cited coverage limitations and exclusions as a deterrent to obtaining insurance, while 15% admitted to a lack of awareness or understanding regarding available medical insurance options. Capstone-Intel, in response to the existing gap in private medical insurance coverage, has put forth a proposal to address this issue. “One effective approach is to create educational campaigns that explain the advantages of private insurance, such as shorter wait times for appointments, access to a wider network of healthcare providers, and comprehensive coverage for a range of medical treatments and procedures. These campaigns can be disseminated through various channels, including social media, television and radio advertisements, and informational materials distributed in healthcare facilities and community centers,” it said. “Additionally, it is important to simplify the process of obtaining private medical insurance for the public. This can be achieved by partnering with insurance companies and healthcare providers to offer user-friendly online platforms where individuals can compare different insurance plans, understand their coverage options, and easily enroll in a plan that best suits their needs. Furthermore, providing financial incentives, such as subsidies or tax credits, can make private insurance more affordable for individuals with lower incomes. By streamlining the enrollment process and making private insurance more accessible, the public can be empowered to take charge of their healthcare and benefit from the advantages of private coverage,” said Capstone-Intel. **** To know more about the data, please click here.

Capstone-Intel partners with gov’t to address mental health issues

Mental health today has become an increasingly important topic of discussion and concern. With the advancements in technology and the fast-paced nature of modern life, the importance of maintaining good mental health has never been more evident. During the media launch held by Capstone-Intel Corporation recently, the primary focus of discussion revolved around the nationwide survey on mental health. The survey was conducted from September 20 to 27, 2023 with a total of 1,210 respondents. The board members of Capstone-Intel, namely Mr. Eero Brillantes (Chairperson, President, and CEO), Dr. Guido David (Chief Data Scientist), Atty. Nic Conti (Chief of Public Affairs), Geraldine Torres-Brillantes (COO and Chief of Development Communication Studies), and Ella Kristina Coronel (Research and Publications Director) were all present at the event. Capstone-Intel, as a dynamic research agency, is committed to actively supporting and advancing its mission of facilitating the implementation of government programs through its research initiatives. “The first stage ng aming ginagawa is to get the public and the officials to be aware of our survey findings on mental health and then from there we will engage the necessary government agencies to share with them the data that we have gathered. Lastly, ‘pag mayroong LGUs na lalapit sa amin para magpatulong in terms of getting the survey when it comes to mental health gagawin namin iyan. We’ve been conducting briefing sa government agencies sa varieties of issues,” said Mr. Brillantes. During the media presentation on the survey findings, respondents were asked to rate their overall mental health and well-being. The results of the self-assessment revealed that 52% of respondents reported their mental health as good, 33% as excellent, 13% as fair, and 2% as poor. However, Dr. David expressed concern about the rates of fair and good mental health. “What’s clear about this information, alarmingly ang 15% dahil medyo mataas ‘yon. That’s more than one out of ten (people),” stated Dr. David. He emphasized the importance of addressing this issue by providing an example. “I am also aware sa schools and universities, there is relatively under staff ang psychological team nila, which means ang guidance counselor nila ay isa lang sa buong school. These are policies that we must reevaluate. The world is different now, and we must face these modern challenges, including depression, so we have to scale up ang staffing natin. And because they are under staff it’s difficult for them to reach out to students who are having issues na hindi na pala nila alam (na issue na). Culturally, nahihiya ang mga bata na lumapit kasi they’re different. If there’s more staff, then we can actually be more proactive than reactive lang,” explained Dr. David. Meanwhile, Atty. Conti delivered an enlightening explanation focused on the critical matter of mental health management within our society. “Ang isa pang problema natin ay ‘yong (halimbawa) tao dine-deny niya na na mayroon siyang issues. Ang dapat kung may issues ka sa mental health, you seek support and guidance, ‘Mayroon ba akong diperensya?’ Kung ikaw mismo ay hindi mo alam na ‘yon ay issue na sa mental health then you will deny na may issue,” explained Atty. Conti. The survey findings also indicate that 21% of the respondents have sought assistance from a mental health professional, which highlights the prevailing insufficiency of government initiatives and societal support in this area. “Isa sa mga dahilan na kaunti ang nagpapakonsulta sa professionals regarding mental health among others ay ‘yong mismong professionals ay kulang. Bahagi ng survey na ipakita hindi lamang sa publiko pero lalo na sa gobyerno na sana magkaroon ng polisiya to encourage more professionals that will take up courses relating to mental health. Dapat ma-integrate ang pagkakaroon ng mental health services sa general health services,” said Atty. Conti. **** To know more about the data, please click here. HIV/AIDS now gets positive discussions online, but low engagements remain a concern – study

A recent social listening report conducted by Capstone-Intel Corporation revealed that the social media presence of HIV/AIDS in the Philippines, in time for the World AIDS Day commemoration, has gotten positive discussions across social and non-social media platforms, with top posts focused on information drives about the topic and the importance of HIV/AIDS awareness. Capstone-Intel is a high-impact research company that uses innovative research technologies, tools, and methods to convert data and information into breakthrough insights and actionable intelligence outputs. It is committed to helping its clients solve problems, find solutions, grow markets and constituencies, build reputations, navigate risks, manage crises, and be the country’s leading private research and intelligence agency.   Background The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a sexually transmitted infection that causes acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) if not managed. Initially, research argues HIV may have spread from chimpanzees to human beings as early as the late 1800s. The virus in chimps is known as the simian immunodeficiency virus. It was most likely transmitted to humans when humans hunted these chimps for meat and got in touch with their contaminated blood. In the Philippines, the first case of HIV infection was recorded in January 1984. Since then, the case count for the virus has gradually increased, and some remain undiagnosed due to fear of being discriminated against. The Department of Health (DOH) revealed in November that the daily average rate of new human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) cases in the country has grown. According to Secretary of Health Ted Herbosa, there are approximately 50 new HIV infections documented daily, which is greater than the 22 daily case rate in 2022. Despite the growing number of daily new cases, Herbosa claims that the total number of HIV patients is less than one percent of the country’s population. Herbosa further stated that the younger generation is becoming more HIV-positive. Data also shows that as of January 2023, there were a total of 110,736 HIV cases reported in the Philippines, which adds to the growing concern of the national government. In an effort to destigmatize HIV/AIDS across the world, the World Health Organization (WHO) founded World AIDS Day as a “reminder” to end the global stigma surrounding HIV/AIDS.   Methodology Capstone-Intel examined the online presence of HIV/AIDS in the country as a topic of discussion for one year, from November 30, 2022, to November 30, 2023, by utilizing all publicly accessible posts from social and non-social media platforms in order to gather the sentiments of the public about the topic.   Facebook Performance Capstone-Intel found that the topic HIV/AIDS garnered a 56,888.1 engagement score for its 1,838 total post count, which yielded over 115,590 total reaction count. When broken down, “Facebook like” accounts for 49.6 percent of the total reactions, with 57,304. Followed by “Facebook love” with 42,313 reactions (36.6 percent), “Facebook sad” with 13,762 (11.9 percent), “Facebook haha” with 7,047 (1.1 percent), “Facebook wow” with 916 (0.8 percent), and “Facebook angry” with 64 reactions (0.1 percent). Looking at the data, the majority of “Facebook love” and “Facebook like” reactions can be attributed to several Filipino social media users loving and receptive to the idea of discussing HIV/AIDS across Facebook.   Online mentions Capstone-Intel likewise revealed that McDonald’s received 50 percent positive mentions, and the remaining 50 percent were negative mentions. This means that the article mentions the brand was angled equally. It is also worth noting that HIV/AIDS received 1,166,065 social media reach, while its non-social media reach yielded over 7,183,525 non-social media reach.   Top posts In terms of top posts, the top post for HIV/AIDS was a social media post from Emmylou Lala Taliño-Mendoza about its measures to ensure that facilities and employees are equipped with necessary awareness about teenage pregnancy, HIV/AIDS, mental health problems, bullying, and other pressing concerns, which received a 3,170.0 engagement score.  This was followed by a news report from TV Patrol featuring the rising cases of HIV/AIDs in the Philippines. This post yielded a total of 2,907.7 engagement score.  The third most engaging post for HIV/AIDS was another social media post from Emmylou Lala Taliño-Mendoza, which also promotes a program that aims to strengthen awareness about pressing issues, including HIV/AIDs among the youth, yielding a total of 2,546.8 engagement score. Despite showing a number of Filipinos loving the idea of talking about HIV/AIDs in a completely positive light, the engagement it generated is small and remains a concern as it did not engage a massive audience.

Supporting Mental Health: 93% of Survey Respondents Demonstrate Awareness

In today’s fast-paced and demanding world, it is crucial to prioritize our health and well-being. Awareness of health also encompasses a holistic understanding of our physical, mental, and emotional well-being. According to the World Health Organization, mental health encompasses more than just the absence of illness. It is a fundamental aspect of both our personal and societal well-being. To assess the significance of this matter, particularly during this National Mental Health Month, Capstone-Intel Corporation conducted a survey aimed at assessing individuals’ level of knowledge and comprehension regarding mental health. The survey was conducted from September 20 to 27, 2023, utilizing a sample size consisting of 1,210 respondents. The collected data reveals that 93% of all respondents possessed knowledge of the term “mental health.” A breakdown by regions reveals that 95% of people in the National Capital (NCR), 93% of people in Balance Luzon, 94% of people in Visayas, and 90% of people in Mindanao have heard of the term. In addition, the data reveals that a significant percentage of respondents, specifically 7%, nationwide lack awareness of the term “mental health”. This lack of awareness is distributed as follows: 5% in the NCR, 7% in Balance Luzon, 6% in Visayas, and 10% in Mindanao. The level of public awareness regarding mental health carries substantial implications for individuals, communities, and society at large. Capstone-Intel provides a comprehensive explanation and recommendation for this matter. “When the public’s awareness of mental health is high, it has significant implications for individuals, communities, and society as a whole. Increased awareness leads to reduced stigma surrounding mental health issues. This means that individuals are more likely to seek help and support without fear of judgment or discrimination. A society with high awareness of mental health can experience positive societal impacts. With better mental health education and understanding, workplaces and educational institutions can implement policies and programs that promote and maintain mental well-being,” expressed Capstone-Intel. Furthermore, Capstone-Intel emphasizes that the significance of mental health extends beyond public awareness alone. “However, it is crucial to recognize that simply being aware of mental health is not enough. It is essential to actively take steps to improve and maintain our mental well-being, such as engaging in regular exercise, practicing mindfulness and meditation, maintaining healthy relationships, and seeking professional help when needed. It is important to note that seeking professional help does not imply that an individual is “mentally sick,” but rather demonstrates a proactive approach to managing one’s mental health. By normalizing the seeking of professional assistance, we can further diminish the stigma surrounding mental health and encourage individuals to prioritize their well-being. We must always remember that health is not just physical,” it added. “Also, to promote the destigmatization of seeking professional support for mental health concerns, it is highly advantageous to incorporate annual executive check-ups that prioritize mental health evaluations and consultations. It is imperative that this be included in government health packages. Furthermore, it is crucial to raise awareness about the availability of psychosocial services within communities and the corresponding responses from the private sector, such as mental health services in workplaces, churches, and educational institutions. A comprehensive campaign should also be implemented to eradicate the stigma surrounding mental health conditions,” said Capstone-Intel.
